DESCRIPTION

The United States Penitentiary in Marion has a long and notorious history in the Bureau of Prisons. Prior to the Florence ADX, USP Marion was the federal prison system’s most secure institution. It held the “Control Unit,” which was supposed to be the most secure part of the most secure federal prison in the nation. Unfortunately, two prisoners murdered two guards in the Control Unit on the same day back in the early 1980s. When that happened, our nation began a movement toward building more secure Supermax Prisons. The high-security penitentiary has an adjacent minimum-security federal prison camp. People in the prison camp sometimes provide labor for the high-security prison, but the minimum-security prisoners never mix with the high-security prisoners.
