ATWATER USP

A low security u.s. penitentiary with an adjacent minimum security satellite camp.

DESCRIPTION

The United States Penitentiary in Atwater has the “Challenge Unit,” which is incredibly helpful to inmates who want to avoid problems in a high-security penitentiary. I’ve visited the Challenge Unit several times. Warden Matevousian purchased a program I created to help more people in prison prepare for success. It’s called the Earning Freedom Mastermind Course. I enjoy visiting USP Atwater to help. Also, I have a personal experience with the penitentiary, because when I concluded my journey through federal prison, I was at USP Atwater–but I was in the adjacent minimum-security camp. I highly recommend the federal prison camp in Atwater for people convicted of white-collar crimes or anyone with points that are low enough for placement in minimum security federal prison camps.

User Review

  • 1. My name is: Michael Santos
  • 2. I arrived on: October of 2011
  • 3. I’m scheduled to leave on: August of 2012
  • 4. My judge sentenced me to serve how many months? I served a 45-year prison term and I concluded my time at the federal prison camp in Atwater. But I have also visited the USP in Atwater several times.
  • 5. In the past, I’ve been confined at the following institutions:I started at USP Atlanta. I went to FCI McKean. I was at FCI Fairton. I was at FCI Fort Dix. I was at the federal prison camp in Florence. I was in the federal prison camp in Lompoc. I was in the federal prison camp in Taft. And I was released from the federal prison camp in Atwater. Besides those prisons, I was in numerous detention centers and jails along the way.
  • 6. I was convicted of the following offense:I was convicted of selling cocaine when I was in my early 20s.
  • 7. Pros of the facility:It should be clear that I’m reviewing the federal prison camp in Atwater, not the United States Penitentiary in Atwater. I have visited USP Atwater. But I finished serving my sentence at the federal prison camp in Atwater. It was my favorite federal prison camp for a number of reasons, primarily it’s where I finished! The pros of USP Atwater is that it has a great warden and it has the Challenge program. It also offers the Earning Freedom Mastermind Program, where people inside can learn about strategies to prepare for success. The camp was great because it’s open and it offers a lot of free time to study and to commit to fitness.
  • 8. Cons of the facility: WIth regard to the USP, the con is that there is violence. The con of the camp is that it doesn’t have cubicles, but only a rows of a bunk beds.
  • 9. Food assessment of the facility: The food at the camp was very good. I liked it. I liked the food because you could have large quantities, and I’m a big eater. I also liked the salad bar that was available several times a week.
  • 10. Recreational opportunities at the facility:I ran around the track. During my final month I ran 700 miles at the camp. I did a lot of strength training with push-ups and dips. There was not a pull-up bar. There are no weights. But I was able to improve my fitness while at the federal prison camp in Atwater.

  • 11. Programs available in the facility: The federal prison camp offers a lot of liberty. For a self-directed prisoner like me, that was all that I wanted. I wanted free time that I could use to prepare for success. In the penitentiary, the Challenge program helps people avoid violence. Another program in the USP helped people avoid interactions with gangs. I don’t remember the name, but the program let people live in a housing unit that was separate from the general population. That way they could avoid trouble with others.
  • 12. Best jobs in the facility: Although I don’t know about the USP, while in the camp I was able to work as an orderly. The orderly job required very little from me. That meant I could focus on my writing and on my fitness.
  • 13. Living Quarters in the facility: In the federal prison camp, the bunk beds are in a grid. There are no cubicles. It’s just one big room. Televisions were in the center. People listened to sound through headphones. Without cubicles, there was less privacy than I would like. But the bathrooms were large, and there was always room to shower. I liked it very much. But of course I was an experienced prisoner. A new prisoner may not like Atwater as much as I liked it.
  • 14. How would I assess safety in the facility? : No problems with safety in the camp. In the USP, there is always volatility.
  • 15.What types of pressure did I feel in the facility?:I didn’t feel any pressure, but I was in the camp. I was eager to go home, as I had been in prison for 25 years when I arrived at USP Atwater.
  • 16.What is my general review?:I served my best time at the Atwater federal prison camp. Every prison had its benefits. For me, the benefit of FPC Atwater was that I made a lifelong friend there, and I was able to get into the best shape of my life. Then I got out, which was awesome.
  • 17.On a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give the facility a rating of: 9
